The Canon EOS 60D breaks new DSLR ground by offering in-camera RAW image processing and creative digital filters.
The EOS 60D's built-in pop-up flash features a built-in Integrated Speedlite Transmitter for controlling up to two groups of off-camera Speedlites without the need for an external transmitter. Note that the 50D's PC Sync port for connecting the camera to external lights has been removed, limiting the 60Ds use in studio environments. There's also the expected hotshoe for use with one of Canon's flashguns. The 60D used in this review was purchased retail. Owning a Canon product gives you access to Canon support. The support provided by Canon's USA division is excellent (sorry, I have no experience with the other Canon divisions). When I call for support, I get an intelligent person who sincerely wants to help me with whatever my question or problem is. Repair service, though I have seldom needed it, is fast and reliable. The change on the top that I am finding hardest to adjust to is the lock release on the Mode Dial. I would still say that I do not like having to press a button to change the Mode Dial. I have not experienced inadvertent changes to my mode setting without the lock, so ... I do not prefer the extra button press being required.
Body not as rugged as mag-alloy 50D; AF assist only works when flash is up, though flash can be forced off; Auto-exposure not reliable in very low light; No continuous autofocus in Movie mode. For us, the real work of a modern image sensor and processor is done in low light. So we like to show some benchmark images from a camera, starting at ISO 1,600 and moving up, as well as a selection of Gallery images shot out in daylight. Since we didn't have the Canon 60D at our lab near Atlanta for our initial preview, we went out shooting on Long Island, NY at Old Westbury Gardens.
Please note that the 50D and the 60D have very similar shutter sounds. Following is a visual of a 5.3 fps capture. This frame rate leaves some good shots missing, but is still usable for action shots. Geek-free printing. The Canon 60D complies with both the PictBridge and DPOF v1.1 (Digital Print Order Format) standards, both aimed at simplifying the task of obtaining prints for the computer-averse, or the photographer looking for hard-copy output with the minimum of fuss. PictBridge allows the Canon 60D to be connected directly to compatible printers via its USB cable, and prints made of both Raw and JPEG images. Available controls include paper size, paper type, layout, printing effects, date and time imprinting, cropping, and tilt correction (+/- 10 degrees in 0.5 degree increments). The Canon 60D includes Canon's Direct Print button, which allows the image currently being viewed in Playback mode to be queued to the attached PictBridge printer.
Comparing apples to apples. If you have read any of the site's other recent Canon EOS DSLR camera reviews, you will recognize the following color block test that clearly shows and compares sensor noise. . At 20 x 30 we begin to see slight chroma noise in the shadows, and some softening in the reds and other finely detailed areas.Processor. Canon has retained their DIGIC 4 image processor in the EOS 60D. With increased resolution, but the same image processor and sensor readout design, something had to give. The Canon 60D's burst shooting speed hence falls to 5.3 frames per second, down from 6.3 frames per second in the 50D. Maximum burst depth is essentially unchanged, however, at 16 Raw images, or 58 large / fine JPEG images.Later I went inside the Westbury House and took some shots indoors with the extremely fast (and heavy) EF 85mm f/1.2 lens. The lens was so bright that I chose to dial the EV back by -1.3 to keep the dark look to the rooms, while still maintaining the ridiculously smooth bokeh. At that point I was having more fun with the lens than the camera, but that's testament to how quickly the Canon 60D got out of my way and just let me take pictures, which is what it's all about.
. The Canon 60D's 18.0-megapixel, APS-C sized CMOS image sensor raises the resolution slightly from the Canon 50D's 15.1 megapixels, accompanied by a decrease in photodiode pitch from 4.7µm to 4.3µm. With dimensions of 22.3 x 14.9mm, the overall sensor size is unchanged, yielding the same 1.6x focal length crop. The new sensor also retains a four-channel readout design, like that of its predecessor. Along with the articulated LCD, the entire rear of the 60D has been changed from the 50D. I'll start with the grip. The thumb position gains a more substantial bump-out for your thumb to hold onto but shifts the grip position to the right slightly, creating a less-full-feeling grip than the 50D has. More fingertip room added on the front of the 60D body is welcomed. The 60D is much more comfortable for me to use than the Rebel bodies (the downside being the additional size required to create this comfort). Like most DSLRs aimed at beginners and amateurs, the EOS 60D provides a number of auto shooting modes aimed at beginners, including portrait, landscape, close-up, sports and night portrait and flash off choices, accessed via the chunky Mode dial on the top-left of the camera, complete with a central lock button to prevent accidental movement. All of these functions performed adequately in all aspects, apart from the close-up macro mode that did not come near to offering a true 1:1 reproduction (you'll need a dedicated macro lens for that).
. The EOS 60D additionally inherits the 63-zone metering system of the EOS 7D and EOS 550D / T2i, along with the wireless flash control and electronic levelling gauge of the 7D, although downgrades the latter to a single axis tilt and relies on the EV scale to indicate it through the viewfinder. All but the GH2 were shot with the same brand and make of lens, the Sigma 70mm f/2.8, while the GH2 used the very sharp Olympus 50mm f/2 Four Thirds lens.
Canon EOS 60D Lenses. Learn more about the Canon 60D Accessories. The Canon 60D is compatible with the newly designed battery grip, which also provides duplicate controls for portrait shooting. Canon has also introduced a new E2 hand strap with the Canon 60D, addressing some users' concerns that neck straps can be restrictive, or simply get in the way, especially when you're using the Vari-angle LCD screen. The Canon EOS 60D is a mid-range DSLR featuring 18 Megapixels, HD video and a fully-articulated screen. Announced in August 2010, it's the official replacement for the EOS 50D, but Canon's repositioned the new model from the semi-pro status of its predecessor into a new mid-range category..
Though it's the sixth EOS SLR to support HD video capture, the Canon 60D is the first of its class to do so. Resolutions include 1,920 x 1,080p, 1280 x 720, and 640 x 480, saved in H.264 compression with linear PCM audio. Frame rates include 30, 25, and 24 fps for Full HD, and 60 fps and 50 fps for HD and VGA. Also included is a feature only recently added to the 5D Mark II's video mode, the all-important audio-level adjustment; so in this sense, the Canon 60D is a more advanced video capture device than the 7D.As mentioned in the overview, the Canon 60D has a few more consumer-friendly features to go along with its consumer-friendly design. In addition to the Scene modes that have always accompanied this level of SLR, Canon now includes many image and video editing features right in the camera. Much of what was introduced in the 7D, including the color-detecting metering system and leveling features, made it into the Canon 60D, but along with those changes came a simplification of controls and a downsizing of the camera body. The one feature unique to the EOS 60D among Canon's SLRs is the Vari-angle LCD, brought over from the PowerShot line.

PowerShot SX60 HS The menu system is now the same in design as on the EOS 550D and 7D, which in turn borrowed the design from the professional range of EOS cameras. There's a simplified tab structure that does away completely with scrolling, with 11 colour-coded horizontal tabs (dependant upon the shooting mode) and up to 7 options in each one, providing quick and easy access to the various options. You can even setup your own customised menu page for instant access to frequently used settings via the My Menu tab. Only the complex Custom Functions menu detracts a little from the overall usability.
The 60D will make you look every inch the serious photographer. It's definitely not a camera for surreptitious shooting, thanks, in part, to the satisfyingly loud 'clunk' that's heard every time the shutter fires. The staff at the Westbury House kindly gave us special permission to photograph inside the house itself, as photographs are normally prohibited. The period decor and particularly the relatively dark lighting in the dining room offered a good test of the Canon 60D's high-ISO ability. We compared its images with those from a Rebel T2i, that being the most recent model using a similar 18-megpixel sensor, and hence was the one that would likely be the most competitive with the 60D's image quality. Shots with both cameras were captured with the same copy of Canon's excellent 24-70mm f/2.8L lens, at 24mm and an aperture of f/7.1. Exposure levels between the two cameras are very slightly different, as minor variation in outside light between the two sets of shots and/or slight differences in the cameras' sensitivity meant we had to adjust shutter times slightly to arrive at the same brightness. (The light variation was probably just over a third of an f-stop; that was the smallest adjustment we could make in shutter speed, and the T2i shots ended up slightly brighter, despite their having exposure times about 1/3 EV shorter.) The lens was focused on the vase at the back of the room, just to the left of center, using magnified live view for best accuracy, and the camera was mounted on a massive Manfrotto studio tripod to avoid any vibration. The Canon 60D began shipping in September 2010 and comes in a kit with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens for a list price of US$1,399.00, or body only for US$1,099.00.
Like the 5D Mark II and the 7D, the 60D uses the Canon LP-E6 Battery Pack. The 60D tracks the percent usage (1% increments), the shutter count and recharge performance for the batteries. Anyone who owns no camera or owns a film camera of any type will love the image quality and features in the 60D. Anyone who owns a point and shoot camera (but does not mind the additional size of the 60D) will find the image quality (especially in low light), fast AF and large viewfinder of the 60D especially valuable. Rebel owners will likely find the grip and control the 60D gives them to be a nice upgrade - and the larger viewfinder will be appreciated for sure. Rebel owners of course must insure that the 60D's additional size and weight are not a problem for them.
Vignetting correction. The Canon 60D retains the Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction function that debuted in the 50D. Also known as vignetting correction, this function automatically reduces the severity of lens vignetting, which is visible as shading in the corners of an image. The function can be disabled, and works by default with a subset of Canon's most common EF-mount lenses. Data for additional lenses can be uploaded to the camera via the EOS Utility software, as needed. The Lens Peripheral Illumination correction function will work for any focal length, f-stop, or focus distance.Metering. The Canon 60D inherits Canon's latest metering system, previously seen in the EOS 7D and Rebel T2i. Where the 50D used a 35-zone metering sensor, the Canon 60D now includes a 63-zone iFCL sensor, which stands for Intelligent Focus, Color, and Luminance metering. The name hints at how the sensor works: the iFCL chip has a dual-layer design with each layer sensitive to different wavelengths of light, allowing subject color to be taken into account when determining exposure. Information on focusing points is also taken into account in metering calculations. In this area, the Canon 60D's iFCL chip differs from that of the EOS 7D, taking account of the 60D's nine-point AF, as distinct from the 19-point system in the 7D. Canon Canon 60D nhỏ hơn một chút so với 50D. Bánh xe điều chỉnh ở mặt sau cũng có thêm các phím điều hướng thứ cấp ở bên trong. The standard light-sensitivity range of ISO 100 to ISO 6,400 is expandable up to an ISO 12,800 equivalent for situations where light is low but use of a flash is undesirable. Most mid-range dSLRs now offer similar 'see in the dark' abilities. Similarly, the 60D offers the ability to shoot a JPEG file on its own, or capture both a JPEG file and an optimum-quality raw shot at the same time. Canon 60D doesn't have a sensor based image stabilization system but 107 of these lenses already comes with Optical Image Stabilization. There are also 85 lenses with weather sealing for 60D that you can couple with its weather sealed body. The Canon EOS 60D is not compatible with the N3 standard remotes that the 50D used. The Remote Switch RS-60E3 (wired) is supported and the small, inexpensive Canon wireless remotes including the Canon RC-6 Wireless Remote are great options. Want to be part of your own family picture? Or just don't want to deal with a remote release cord? This is the accessory you want. The older the xxD body owned, the more sense an upgrade to the 60D makes. But the Canon EOS 7D may also make as much or more sense to this group - especially if a significant memory card investment is part of the equation. I'm tempted to say that Canon has "Rebel-ized" the xxD line with the 60D model iteration, but that statement is probably too harsh. But some features/advantages certainly have been lost - and the "Prosumer" designation has changed to "Consumer" for the latest xxD model. FocusingCanon 60D features both Contrast Detection and Phase Detection autofocus (AF) systems which ensures speed and accuracy of focusing in most situations. The AF system has 9 focus points and 9 of these sensors are of Cross-type. Cross-type sensors locks focus faster and more accurate compared to single type sensors.
ISO 12,800 make a very usable 5 x 7 inch print, but with noisy shadows. Reducing the image size to 4 x 6 produces a very nice print, however. Canon EOS 60D. 6. امتیاز کاربر شما هم امتیاز دهید. Canon EOS 60D. در : دوربین عکاسی. از : کانن Look and feel. Anyone who thought the 50D was a little too bulky will appreciate the Canon 60D's smaller size and reduced weight. Body-only weight including battery and card has decreased by 1.5 ounces (43g) to 27.5 ounces (1.72 pounds, 779g), despite the swivel screen. The body is made of a mixture of ABS resin, polycarbonate resin, and polycarbonate resin with a special conductive fiber, presumably for EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding. The frame is aluminum and polycarbonate enhanced with glass fiber. Dimensions are 5.7 x 4.2 x 3.1 inches (145 x 106 x 79mm), a little bit shorter and less wide than the 50D, and just a bit thicker overall from the lens mount to the LCD thanks largely to the swiveling LCD. I have to admit that I wasn't interested in this feature when I first read about it. The additional parts would simply consume more space on the rear of the camera - and I was concerned about the nose relief issue this LCD could cause. Would the hinge be another point for failure? And I didn't figure on using it.
Autofocus. The Canon 60D's AF sensor is unchanged from the 50D, and features a 9-point diamond array, with nine cross-type f/5.6 autofocus points, meaning that they're all sensitive to vertical or horizontal lines. Nestled in the center is an additional precision AF sensor that is arrayed diagonally and used when you mount a lens of f/2.8 or faster. It has the advantage of detecting horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines. All nine AF points can be selected automatically or manually, and the autofocus sensor has a working range of -0.5 to 18 EV (at 23°C / ISO 100). The Canon 60D includes the ability to detect the light source (including the color temperature and whether or not the light is pulsing), and then take these into account and microscopically shift the focus as necessary. Autofocus modes include One-shot, Predictive AI Servo AF, and AI Focus AF, which automatically selects between the One-shot and AI Servo modes.Just like the 50D, the Canon 60D provides a diopter adjustment range of -3.0 to +1.0m-1. It also retains the its predecessor's ability to exchange focusing screens, and comes bundled with the same Ef-A Precision-matte focusing screen by default. The 60D is probably best understood as a 'super Rebel.' It's a more comfortable, more flexible, and faster-to-use version of Canon's justly popular entry-level DSLRs. The twin dial controls, better grip, and bigger viewfinder will delight stills shooters while the articulated screen and movie control will please would-be videographers. The Canon EOS 60D is available as a Body only kit with a MSRP of $1099.00 US, or you can get the lens kit which includes the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens at an estimated retail price of $1,399.00 US. The optional BG-E9 battery grip sells for about $270 US. What's in the Box
With much the same sensor electronics, it’s not surprising to find the EOS 60D also sporting the same HD movie modes as the EOS 7D and EOS 550D / T2i. As such, the EOS 60D can shoot Full HD 1080p video at 24, 25 or 30fps, along with 720p HD or VGA video at 50 or 60fps; the EOS 60D also inherits the Movie Crop option of the 550D / T2i, which records the central 640×480 pixel area of the sensor, delivering standard definition movies with around seven times magnification compared to shooting with the entire frame. In past reviews, we've noted that Nikon had Canon SLRs bracketed, introducing SLRs that didn't quite compete directly with Canon's models in price or features, and that was no more true than when the Canon 50D was left to duke it out with both the Nikon D80/D90 and the Nikon D300/D300S. With the 7D now in place to take on the D300S, the Canon 60D is now aimed more directly at the Nikon D90 and D7000, losing a few of its pro features in favor of a more consumer-driven focus and a smaller body. The site owner hides the web page description I left Dave to take pictures inside the hot, non-air conditioned Westbury House, instead wandering out into the Old Westbury Gardens on a very hot day. The good news was that plants love hot days, and the gardens were replete with interesting flowers, birds, and butterflies. Since I knew that I'd only be able to make one pass, I shot primarily with the Canon 60D's kit lens, the EF-S 18-135mm. It's a versatile optic that's well-suited for a walk in the park.

Due to the increase to 18 megapixels, the 60D actually shoots more slowly in the fastest Continuous mode than the previous 50D model, obtaining a speed of 5.3fps for up to 58 full-sized JPEGs or 16 RAW images (1 fps less than the 50D).In addition a new feature called Basic+ applies a creative ambience to images when shooting in the Basic modes. Essentially a more extreme version of the well-established Picture Styles, Basic+ enhancements that can be applied to the scene modes include Vivid, Soft, Warm, Intense, Cool and Brighter. There's also some control over what is essentially the white balance via the Shoot by Lighting effect, with the options being Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Flourescent and Sunset.
Upper right of the lens mount are four holes for the new mono microphone. A stereo microphone jack is also built into the Canon EOS 60D for better quality movie recording. On the 50D, pressing the joystick opened the new Quick Control screen. On the 60D, there's now a dedicated Q button which does the same thing. Depending on which shooting mode you're using, this lets you set various parameters via the LCD screen, using the four-way controller to move around the various options. Similar to the system that Sony Alpha DSLRs have used for a while, the Quick Control screen is particularly well-suited to beginners and tripod work. The long-awaited Canon EOS 60D comes with some incremental upgrades, a few unexpected losses, and some nice surprises; what was not a surprise was its easy and straightforward operation for one already familiar with cameras in this prosumer line, and excellent image quality across the ISO range.

A large LCD display on the top of the camera allows you to make key adjustments on the fly, such as altering the drive mode, metering and ISO speed. This saves you having to drill down into the menu system proper. Adjusting each setting merely requires a button press and a twist of a scroll wheel on the back of the camera.
The Canon EOS 60D has a total of 15 shooting modes available via the top dial that offer something for shooters of all skill levels. The fully-automatic point and shoot green square mode and near-fully automatic "P" (Program) modes are included along with the "CA" (Creative Auto) setting. Creative Auto mode allows the photographer to adjust the shot settings using easily understood words instead of using f/settings and 1/zzz time value shutter speeds. CA settings are displayed on the rear LCD while adjustments are being made. Missing from the 50D's modes are A-Dep and C2. Video mode is new as is B (Bulb) mode. When using the Canon EX580EX II flash, the new rubber gasket mates with the plastic around the EOS 60D's hot shoe, further sealing the body in wet environments. The power switch is moved from the bottom right to the upper left, as it now appears on the 7D. Beneath that is the trashcan button. Canon is still having trouble deciding on a consistent format for buttons on their SLRs, as this is completely different from the 7D, the 50D, and the T2i, as are nearly all of these buttons. The Live View/Record button is at least in the same place on all three cameras, though this one operates more like the T2i than the 7D. That's mostly because both the T2i and 60D have a setting on the Mode Dial that activates Movie mode, while the 7D has a dedicated switch that surrounds the button. Thankfully they retained the AF-ON button, a useful device. Since they moved the power switch from the bottom right, there was no switch handy to deactivate the Quick control dial, so they added an UNLOCK button beneath it. It's a bit confusing, because by default, the Quick control dial is unlocked, and this button does nothing; but if you enable the Lock [Quick control dial] in the menu, the Unlock button finally has a purpose: allowing you to decide when you want the QC dial to adjust EV in Program, Aperture, and Shutter priority modes. If you lock it, though, know that the QC dial will have to be unlocked in Manual mode before it will adjust aperture, so it remains an imperfect solution. Despite a large number of changes to the Canon 60D's user interface, it was still largely familiar. I have to admit that though I'm disappointed that some functions no longer have a button, I found the control layout very efficient. Pulling up the Quick menu is how you get most things done, using the rear status display. I still habitually changed ISO and Drive modes on the top deck most of the time, but it was a lot easier than it is on my 20D, thanks to the simpler one-button, one-function philosophy.
First introduced in November 2010 , Canon EOS 60D is a 18.0MP Semi-Pro DSLR camera with a APS-C (22.3 x 14.9 mm ) sized CMOS sensor. Canon replaced the older Canon 50D with this model and later 60D was replaced with Canon 70D. The shutter-release button is situated atop a large, well-moulded handgrip, around which you can comfortably wrap three fat fingers. The other controls, including the normal array of command dials, a scroll wheel and sundry dedicated function buttons, fall within reach of your right hand's forefinger or thumb. Consequently, operation feels fluid and natural. Now let's get in to more details of our Canon 60D review by analysing its specs and features and listing out its pros and cons compared to average competitor cameras in its class. In Canon's digital SLR range, the EOS 60D sits between the just-above-entry-level EOS 550D and the serious EOS 7D. The 60D has some of the 550D's user-friendliness, while also offering some of the 7D's high-end technology, including its advanced metering system.
Nicely built, but not big or heavy. The Canon EOS 60D is sized between the 7D and T2i - and is similar in size to the 50D. It weighs in at 23.8 oz (675g), which is very slightly less than the 50D. As I've said in other reviews, I'm slowly moving my personally acceptable APS-C high ISO noise level up to ISO 3200. I'll shoot above this setting, but only if the capture is important - and quality requirements are low. The biggest 60D noise improvements over the 50D are at levels that remain very noisy.
As shown in the images above, the Canon EOS 60D has received the same level of weather sealing as the EOS 50D. This amount is slightly less than the 7D's level of sealing. Further economizing on space, Canon has integrated the 8-way joystick of previous models with a smaller Quick Control dial. The end result is an 8-way control disk, useful for selecting among the nine AF points in the viewfinder and navigating in the menus and around zoomed playback images, surrounded by the usual Quick Control dial.Peripheral Illumination Correction is a feature that's actually a lot simpler that it initially sounds. Basically it corrects the unwanted effects of vignetting, typically seen in wide-angle photos in the corners of the frame. The 60D contains a database of correction data for many Canon lenses and, if Peripheral Illumination Correction is enabled, automatically applies it to JPEG images. For RAW images the correction is applied later in the Digital Photo Professional software. Up to 40 lenses can be programmed into the 60D, with over 80 currently available to choose from. Peripheral Illumination Correction is a useful and effective addition, particularly for JPEG shooters, and can safely be left turned on all of the time. The EOS 60D combines an approximately 18.0 million effective pixel APS-C size (22.3 x 14.9 mm) CMOS sensor with Canon's proprietary high-performance DIGIC 4 imaging processor to deliver high image quality with reduced noise. The camera supports an extended ISO range* of 100-6400.. Indeed, the omission dates all the way back to the original Canon consumer digital SLR, the D30, introduced in 2000.LCD. Probably the most notable change on the exterior of the Canon 60D is its Vari-Angle LCD display, appearing for the first time in an EOS-series camera. The tilt mechanism allows the LCD to be folded out 90 degrees to the left of the 60D's body, while the 270-degree swivel mechanism allows the screen to be turned 180 degrees to face upward or forward, or 90 degrees in the opposite direction to face directly downward. This also allows the LCD to be stowed facing inward, offering a modicum of protection against light bumps, scratches, and fingerprints.
The Canon EOS 60D offers 4 creative filters: Grainy B/W, Soft Focus, Toy Camera Effect (vignetting and color shift) and Miniature Effect (reverse tilt-shift look). These filters can be applied to a RAW or JPG image in-camera. A new image file is created using the selected filter and filter settings leaving the original file unaffected. EXIF information for the resulting files contains the name of the filter used along with the setting strength (no setting for Miniature). While on the file size and storage requirements topic, I will note that the 60D uses SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards (class 6 or higher for video). The latest Rebel DSLRs utilize SDHC cards, but this format is a change from the xxD line. A consideration xxD owners must make when considering a DSLR upgrade is how much replacement memory cards will cost. The memory card cost will likely help offset the cost difference between the 60D and the higher-end 7D. At the same time, Rebel owners will save this cost by staying with the 60D over the 7D.
The design of the Canon 60D is slightly smaller, and more specifically aimed at the advanced amateur market, better fitting into the niche occupied by the Nikon D90 and now the D7000.Just two years ago, ISO 12,800 was a throwaway setting at best, with the 50D turning out nasty images fraught with overt banding, visible even in a thumbnail. Today I look at ISO 12,800 from the Canon 60D and T2i and have a hard time finding much to comment on. It's impressive. Feel free to shoot in near-darkness.
From the top you see the nice EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens, equivalent to a 28.8-216mm lens on a full-frame 35mm camera. Note that the lens is not USM (ultrasonic motor) drive, so it makes a little noise while focusing, unlike the 28-135mm lens that was bundled with the 50D. The Mode dial on the left shoulder is a little different. First it omits the longstanding A-DEP setting that most people probably didn't use (it allows you to set your desired depth of field using AF points), and second, there's a button in the middle that you use to unlock the Mode dial. This is not new to EOS, but it is new to their digital SLRs (my old EOS Elan had a locking Mode dial). Many will love it, many will hate it. It's easy enough to learn once you're used to your camera, and prevents you from accidentally changing the exposure mode. Canon replaced the older Canon 50D with this model and later 60D was replaced with Canon 70D. I also appreciated the smaller size of the Canon 60D. It's not dramatically smaller, but is better for a walk than the 50D was. I don't think it's as small as my now ancient 20D, but the grip is smaller, and will be more comfortable for a wider array of users. Not so good for: Demanding users who need the greater speed, sophistication and durability of a semi-pro grade camera. Want more battery life? Shoot in portrait orientation a lot? Add a BG-E9 Battery Grip as shown above. It accepts two LP-E6 batteries (or 6 AA batteries in the included tray). Better yet, it provides a larger horizontal grip and a complete vertical grip with the appropriate buttons. The BG-E9 adds a lot to the size and weight of the 60D, but it is easily installed or removed to give you the best of both worlds. What is the difference between Canon EOS 6D and Canon EOS 60D? Live View attempts to satisfy both the consumer and more technical user, with three types of focusing system on offer. The first, Quick AF, works by physically flipping the camera mirror to engage the auto-focus sensor, which then momentarily blanks the LCD screen and causes a physical sound, before the image is displayed after about 1 second. The other methods, Live AF and Live AF with Face Detection, use an image contrast auto-focus system, much like that used by point-and shoot compacts, the main benefits being the complete lack of noise during operation, and no LCD blackout. Unfortunately these are much slower than the Quick AF mode, taking over 3 seconds to focus on a clearly-defined subject in bright light, which I think will put off most users that are attracted by the promised point-and-shoot experience. On a more positive note, you can move the AF point around the screen, and the 60D successfully detected faces in most situations. I have not made my self-diagnosed HLDS (Horizon-Level Deficiency Syndrome) a secret - it seems that no matter how hard I try to keep the horizon level, I still don't get all scenes framed perfectly level. I typically use grid focusing screens to assist me with this issue (note that the 50D and 60D share focusing screens). A great feature implemented in the 60D is the Single-Axis Electronic Viewfinder Level. To use the Viewfinder Level, C.Fn-IV-2 (Custom Function Menu IV, Option 2) must be used to assign the Set button to option 5 - Viewfinder Level. The Set button is then used to display horizon-level indication in the exposure scale at the bottom of the viewfinder (in landscape/horizontal shooting orientation only). Pressing the camera's shutter button halfway down clears the level indication. An unusuality I'll mention is that, when shooting sports in vertical orientation using AI Servo and the high speed frame, I found a few images improperly rotated - they were off by 180 degrees. In one specific file set, out of 92 images, 3 were rotated 180 degrees. This is not a big deal, but I seldom get an improperly rotated image out of a current DSLR unless I'm shooting up or down, so it is unusual. As would be expected at this point in time, the Canon EOS 60D has received the renowned, game-changing EOS HD video capabilities. While it is not a perfect-for-everyone video package, the 60D, with its huge-to-video-camera-standards sensor, delivers very impressive video image quality. Because of this quality, EOS bodies are much more frequently being used to capture video for everything from interviews to motion pictures. The large sensor combined with the huge range of lenses available gives even those on a tight budget the ability to create incredible video projects utilizing shallow DOF and low/available light. Those with larger budgets can use the HDSLRs as disposables - crashing them or risking destruction of them on set. If an image is OOF (Out of Focus), I will probably delete it with little other consideration. And I often rely on AF, so AF accuracy is important. Chuck Westfall (Canon USA) states "The EOS 60D has the same AF sensor as the EOS 40D and 50D, so all 9 points are standard-precision cross-type effective to maximum apertures as small as f/5.6. There is also an X-shaped high-precision cross-type focusing sensor on the center focusing point that is used with coupled lenses and lens/extender combinations that have maximum apertures of f/2.8 or larger."
